Weather: Summer-like heat combined with wind, rain and fire warnings set to hit this weekend – here’s what to expect in your city

Summer-like heat, strong winds, bushfire warnings and rain are all factors accompanying the first weekend of spring in parts of Australia.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius in Sydney on Friday, which is significantly higher than the 19 degrees Celsius recorded on the same day last year.

Weather conditions are set to improve over the weekend, with the office predicting temperatures will drop to 16°C on Sunday, with up to 1mm of rain.

Meanwhile, much of the south of the country is bracing for another round of devastating winds on Friday, with gusts of up to 105 km/h expected.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned that higher temperatures combined with strong winds could increase the risk of fires, although no warnings were issued on Friday morning.

Satellite imagery from the Bureau shows multiple hot spots have been detected along the eastern reaches of New South Wales and southern Queensland, likely small fires caused by lightning strikes.

Strong winds are expected on Friday in the Australian Capital Territory, southern and central highlands, the south coast, and the Blue Mountains, Illawarra and Snowy Mountains.

Up to 10mm of rain is forecast for southern Melbourne on Friday before the rain clouds dissipate and temperatures drop over the weekend.

Further west, in Adelaide, temperatures are set to reach 20°C on Friday, with a slight drop over the weekend. Rainfall totals of between 8mm and just 1mm are forecast.

In Brisbane, on the other hand, it is unlikely that a single drop of rain will fall over the weekend, the skies will be clear, the weather will be sunny and the maximum temperature will be 29°C.

The same cannot be said for Tasmania, where after last week’s floods, up to 10mm of rain is forecast for Hobart on Friday, after which most of the rain is also expected to dissipate.

Minor flood warnings remain in force for the Macquarie, Isis, Lake, Meander, Mersey, North Esk and South Esk rivers.

The weather forecast for Perth on Friday is for up to 3mm of rain and a maximum temperature of 22°C over the weekend.

Fire warnings are in effect for the Central Interior region of Western Australia on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Darwin was forecast to record a maximum temperature of 35C with a slight chance of rain, while Canberra was forecast to hit 24C on Friday.
