Bodybuilder Giuliano Pirone, 33, died after collapsing in the shower and being left uncovered for 15 hours at a 24-hour gym

A BODYBUILDER died after collapsing in the shower at a 24-hour gym. His body was not found for 15 hours.

Giuliano Pirone was training for a bodybuilding competition when he fell and suffered a traumatic brain injury in an enclosed shower stall at a gym in the northern suburbs of Perth, Australia, on August 20.

Doctors believe Giuliano's blood sugar levels were low and he may have had a seizure.

He went to the gym before work and was not discovered until late that evening when police raided his cubicle and found him lying on the floor of a cold shower.

He was on life support at Joondalup Hospital for two weeks but died on Thursday morning.

Unfortunately, Giuliano did not regain consciousness and an MRI scan confirmed that he had lost brain functions.

His distraught mother Daniela Pirone told ABC Radio Perth: “I will never look at the Sun, the Moon or the sky the same way again, the light that shone brightly has left me.”

Doctors believe the cause of the drop in blood sugar was Giuliano’s blood sugar levels being too low.

They also say he probably suffered a seizure.

His mother said she started to panic when he didn’t come home that day or call her back.

The bodybuilder’s family contacted his friends, ex-wife and people he met daily, but no one responded.

Ms Pirone reported the man missing to police, who tracked him down using a phone found at the gym.

She added: “The police had to intervene, they found him in the shower.

“They thought he was dead.”

Police reportedly performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and Giuliano regained consciousness before an ambulance took him to hospital.

Ms Pirone said unstaffed 24-hour gyms were dangerous and there needed to be more scrutiny of people using the facilities.

She said: “There should be a check-in system so if someone hasn’t checked out after two or three hours, staff should look around for that person.”

Western Australia Police have reportedly been given access to CCTV footage from the gym and are due to prepare a report for the coroner.
