Since Mayor Troy Thompson was elected in March, there have been ongoing disputes between councilors and the mayor.

Mr. Thompson is under investigation by a state corruption watchdog over, among other things, his claims during the mayoral campaign that he served in the military.

His council colleagues unanimously voted for him to resign in June, just days after Mr Thompson admitted in an interview with the Nine Network that he had misled voters about his military service by blaming it on “over 100” concussions.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles and Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said Mr Thompson’s role was untenable.

The Crime and Corruption Commission made no findings against Mr Thompson.

One of Mr Thompson’s colleagues told NewsCorp the mayor had put forward a list of demands and that if they were not met he would ask the state government to dissolve the council, leading to a by-election.

The demands reportedly included support for the mayor’s advisor.

Local Government Minister Meaghan Scanlon has appointed an adviser but said she will not make any decisions until the anti-corruption watchdog completes its investigation.

“We are all adults,” she told reporters.

“I expect mayors and councillors to act in the best interests of the role they are entrusted with, which is to represent the people of Townsville.

“A number of cases were referred to the CCC, the competent body to conduct the investigation.

“I will await any potential investigation or findings until I determine if I need to take any additional steps.”

Mr Thompson welcomed the adviser’s appointment, saying there was a “real need” to assist the council.

“We have a situation where councilors blame me for everything,” he said in a Facebook post.

“At the same time, I just want to work with them for the good of the city.

“In these circumstances it is appropriate that we now have a statutory advisor to help councillors comply with the law.”

A local government spokesman said the adviser would assist the council in good governance and ensure the “effective conduct” of meetings.

The Advisor is appointed for an initial period of six months.

“It is absolutely clear that after all councillors have refused to work with me for the good of the residents, they now need someone to hold their hand to do it,” Mr Thompson said.
