NRL: Souths bid rejected, Mitchell to serve ban in 2025

Latrell Mitchell will be forced to serve his suspension at the start of next season after the NRL officially rejected South Sydney’s claims he would be fit to play in Round 27.

On Friday morning, the NRL confirmed the Rabbitohs’ final round match against the Sydney Roosters could not be counted towards Mitchell’s suspension because he was deemed to be unfit.

Mitchell has not played since injuring his foot against Penrith on July 4. The Rabbitohs confirmed last month that he would not play again this season.

“The NRL has informed the South Sydney Rabbitohs that Latrell Mitchell will not serve his suspension for Round 27,” an NRL spokesman said.

“Based on the information provided, the NRL is not satisfied that the player is fit and ready to play in Round 27.

“The NRL has requested clarification and further information from the club regarding the player’s physical condition and his availability to participate in the match, including a fitness assessment.

“Despite numerous requests, these were not provided in time to enable a proper and informed assessment of the player’s fitness to participate in the match tonight.

“The player will serve the one-match suspension when fit and able to play in the 2025 NRL season.”

After Mitchell was suspended for one match for sharing a photo of himself with white powder smeared across his face, Souths pushed for him to be declared fit to play.

On Thursday, the Rabbitohs family sought legal advice on the matter after the NRL ruled three independent medical reports were not enough to sway the NRL.

The decision means the defender will be forced to miss the first match of South Sydney’s 2025 season under returning coach Wayne Bennett, assuming he is fit.
