Columbia police say one woman is dead and another is in jail after a fatal crash

One woman was killed and another was taken to jail following a crash Wednesday night, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Police said Thursday that Sydney Ezelle, 27, has been charged with a number of offences, including driving under the influence causing death.

A 58-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash, police said. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim.

Police said the crash happened at the intersection of Broad River Road and Lost Creek Drive. That’s also near the intersection of Piney Woods Road and a block from the popular shopping and dining area on Harbison Boulevard.

Information on the course of the crash and the time of the collision is not available.

No other injuries were reported.

Police said in addition to driving under the influence, Ezelle was also charged with speeding and taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Ezelle was also charged with a seat belt violation, jail records show.

Bail has not yet been set, according to jail records. The woman remains behind bars.

Richland County court documents show Ezelle is due back in court on November 22.

As of Sunday, 582 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2024, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS said.

At least 31 people died in crashes in Richland County in 2024, according to DPS. In 2023, 61 people died in the county, DPS said.
