Police searching for a missing Australian tourist believe she may be on the South Island.

Elizabeth Wielga, 67, checked out of her accommodation in Tongariro on August 30 but did not check in for a flight from Auckland that day.

A police spokesman said her family and police were concerned for her welfare and wanted to make sure she was safe.

“Ms. Wielga does not have a phone or computer and it is possible that she is unaware that the police are trying to locate her,” he said.

“Following information received from the public today, police believe Ms Wielga travelled to Wellington after checking out of accommodation in Tongariro on 30 August. “Information suggests she may intend to travel to Picton.”

Police are asking anyone who has seen Ms Wielga or has information that could help locate her to contact them on 105 and quote case number 240905/7641.
