Construction on Majestic Oak Park in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, is scheduled to begin in 2025.

The live oak tree will be the focal point of the park in Sunset Beach.

The project, called Majestic Oak Park, has been underway since 2022. Here are six things to know about the property.

It is located on Sunset Beach Island.

The 4.28-acre site is located on the eastern end between Cobia and 16t streets in the South Jinks Creek area.

A unique tree grows in this area.

Sunset Beach City Administrator Lisa Anglin explained that the city is currently working to secure a live oak tree on the property that is believed to be the oldest tree on the island.

“It will be enclosed by a fence,” Anglin wrote in an email.

The city purchased this property to preserve it as open space.

The city closed on the property on Nov. 16, 2022, for $2 million. The city received grant funds to finance the park. Funding so far includes $500,000 from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund in 2022, $250,000 from the NC Division of Coastal Management Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access program, and a second $500,000 grant from the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund in 2024.

The city also applied for another NC Division of Coastal Management Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access grant to assist with park development. The amount requested in that grant application is $392,175.

The park will offer amenities.

According to the park’s development plan, in addition to open space and a live oak tree, the park will feature a parking lot, piers, trails, a fishing pier, a kayak and boat dock, restrooms, a wildlife viewing platform, benches, swings, a bocce court and a shaded area with picnic tables.

It will be the second park in the city.

Anglin noted that the city currently has a 5-acre park on the mainland, with properties along the Intracoastal Waterway and Mary’s Creek. It is located at 206 Sunset Blvd. N.

Construction work will begin after the tree is secured.

“I expect work to begin in the winter of 2025,” Anglin said.
